Should you give everything away free?

Andy over at damniwish.com suggests it might not be a bad idea to give free stuff away. People who are looking for free stuff won’t pay anyway, and those who don’t want to do it for themselves will happily pay someone to do it.
How can you apply this to your small business? What can you give away to your customers to increase loyalty, and even traffic from search engines?

I guess the best would be giving away free information (ebooks, speeches, videos) and in return build a huge list of loyal customers. Convert them in future with a product that goes along with another free stuff.
