Chris Brogan asks a very unique question to bloggers, are you writing chapters or episodes when you write.

“in ‘chapters’ model, we get a little precis at the beginning of each episode. It says, “Previously, on ____.” Then, we get to see a few seconds that should remind us of whatever it was we saw last time we tuned in. In the episodes method, often used in sitcoms, everything seems to reset from whatever happens during the show by the time we get to the end – Chris Brogan ,http://www.chrisbrogan.com/chapters/

But let’s take this concept a little further into your marketing and product design. Are you building products that are chapters or are you building episodes? Are your products or services one-offs that have no continuity, or are you building a lifetime product that naturally brings your customers back. By nature many products are meant to be used one time, but once you capture that audience member and sell them, then what… what do you offer? Do you hope they re-buy the same product some day, or do you follow up with an extension or similar product that compliments the original. Can you create “spinoffs” of your main product that takes advantage of the popularity of your current product?

Either strategy has its merit, but understand that once you’ve gone through the work of capturing an audience, it is much easier to continue with them than it is to replace them with a new audience member.

Create loyal raving fans and your ratings will soar.
